Power management system (PMS), energy management system (EMS) or hybrid system controller - we use the latter. Many names are floating around, but in short it is a system which controls the power suppliers in the most efficient way, securing stability of supply and thereafter minimising the total power production cost.
When several technologies are connected, some with fluctuating power production, the need for a “smart” autonomous control increase.
Our hybrid controller ensures optimal performance on many different levels. It can range from a system that just prioritizes the renewable power to a system with weather forecast implementation and machine learning. In other words, the possibilities in this controller are endless.
When we deliver a control that integrates different technologies, we make sure appropriate studies are done to make sure the implemented control matches the specific solution.
In general, a control system which integrates different power producers, is a system “sitting on top of” the power plants distributed control system (DCS) and calculates the power setpoints, starts/stops and which plants that should be in isochronous and droop mode. These commands are then communicated to the DCS through communication protocols such as IEC61850, IEC60870-5-104, Modbus etc.
A control system delivered by BWSC will always have security of supply as the highest priority.
When the share of renewables increases in a power grid, two areas are being challenged:
- the reliability of the delivered power and
- the system inertia
A combination of hardware and software handle these changes – synchronous compensators and/or battery energy storage (BESS) and control systems.
The control system can take all parameters into account, such as measurements (frequency, voltage etc.) and weather forecasts, in order to calculate the required spinning reserve and make sure that there are always the required spinning reserves available from either the conventional generation or from BESS. Depending on the requirements to the control system, several other competencies such as clever load shedding can also be added.
Second priority for the control system after security of supply, is minimising the total power production cost.
The general aims are:
- lowering fuel use by prioritising renewables and use BESS as spinning reserve (if present)
- decreasing number of start/stops of the conventional power plants, by utilizing weather forecast and BESS (if present)
- optimiseing efficiency of the total system be selecting efficient power running at optimal load points

We assist customers worldwide throughout all or specific phases of a power plant’s life cycle. BWSC provides project development and investments, turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deliveries as well as long-term operation and maintenance (O&M), technical support, service, spare parts and training.
BWSC is independent of any technology but ensures the overall performance of our hybrid power plant. And we are on the front development always assessing new technologies in order to provide competitive solutions. Currently we are assessing the production of hydrogen at the mine site utilising otherwise clipped renewable power by integrating an electrolysis facility into our hybrid power plant. This will replace the fuel costs for e.g. the long-haul outbound mining trucks.
